About the circuit
The track
The Algarve International Circuit lies in the hills north of Portimão in southern Portugal. It opened in 2008 and is known as a rollercoaster: the 4.653 km lap rises and falls sharply, with blind crests where you only see the next corner at the last moment. It has hosted the Superbike World Championship since its opening, and Formula 1 and MotoGP raced here from 2020.
Signature corners
The main straight drops downhill into a heavy braking zone for turn 1. Many corners carry sponsor and place names, such as Lagos, Sagres and Galp, and one is named after the British rider Craig Jones. The final corner is a long, fast right-hander onto the straight, where a good exit counts.
Who it suits
Portimão is thrilling, but the blind crests reward knowing the track. Its mild winters make it a favourite for winter trackdays and rider trainings. The circuit's own website may not be reused, so Trackstr lists the dates of organisers who run days here.
Getting there
The circuit is near the A22 motorway in the Algarve, just north of Portimão. Faro airport is about 45 to 60 minutes away by car.
