About the circuit
The track
Silverstone, on the border of Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire, is the home of the British Grand Prix. Built on a former Second World War airfield, it hosted the first round of the Formula 1 World Championship in 1950. The 5.9 km Grand Prix circuit is fast and flowing, with wide run-off areas. National and International layouts are used for many club events.
Signature corners
Copse, the fast right-hander after the old pit straight, is taken at very high speed by racing cars. Maggotts, Becketts and Chapel form one of the most famous sequences in the world: a rapid series of direction changes. Stowe, Club and Abbey are other classic names, and the newer Wing area houses the pits.
Who it suits
Silverstone is fast and flowing, with good run-off, so it suits drivers of most levels. Its high speeds reward experience, and newcomers should build up gradually or take an instructor.
Getting there
The circuit is near the village of Silverstone, between Towcester and Brackley, about 15 miles west of Milton Keynes. Birmingham and Luton airports are each about an hour away by car.
